The Association of Insurers and Reinsurers of Developing Countries (AIRDC), Association of Insurance Supervisory Authorities of Developing Countries (AISADC) and SACOS Group Limited successfully organized the 19th AIRDC Conference 2015 with a theme "Long-term Development in Partnership with the Insurance Industry" on September 28-30, 2015 in Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort and Casino, Victoria, Seychelles. The conference was attended by almost 200 delegates from 33 countries.
The Honorable Danny Faure, Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles was the Keynote Speaker during the opening ceremonies. The welcome address was delivered by Mr. Pierre Laporte, CEO of SACOS Group Limited and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 19th AIRDC Conference, followed by the opening remarks of Ms. Grace Muradzikwa, President of AIRDC.
The late Secretary General, former Philippine Insurance Commissioner Evangeline C. Escobillo was also given a special tribute. Mrs. Herminia S. Jacinto, AIRDC Secretary General, highlighted her accomplishments and contributions to the AIRDC and AISADC in a special video presentation. A token of gratitude was given to Madam E.C. Escobillo’s daughters, Kristine Marie and Emmeline Mae.
The first technical session with the topic Regulatory Reforms: Challenges, Successes and Lessons Learnt was shared by the regulators from Zimbabwe, Ghana and Philippines namely Hon. Manett S. Mpofu, Insurance Commissioner, Insurance and Pensions Commission of Zimbabwe, Hon. Lydia Lariba Bawa, Insurance Commissioner, National Insurance Commission of Ghana and Hon. Vida T. Chiong, Deputy Insurance Commissioner, Philippine Insurance Commission.
The second technical session was about Accounting Reforms IFRS and Risk-based Capital, chaired by Dr. Adel Mounir of FAIR and presented by Mr. Mathew Maguire, Mr. Roshan Perera, both from NMG Group Malaysia and Ms. Madhulika Bhaskar, Deputy GM and CRO of General Insurance Corporation of India. The speakers for the third technical session on Pricing in Low Interest Environment amidst Climate Change were Mr. Akshay Pandit, Actuary, KA Pandit Consultants and Actuaries and Mr. David Piesse, Managing Director of Ultimate Risk Solutions, Hong Kong. The session was ably chaired by the Executive Director of the Insurance Institute for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Januario C. Aliwalas.
The fourth technical session on Credit Rating Considerations . . Impact on a Long Term Development chaired by Dr. Jagath Alwis, Director/Chief Technical Officer of Ceylinco General Insurance Limited had Dr. Roger Sellek, Chief Executive of A.M Best Asia-Pacific (Singpore) Private Limited, Singapore and Mr. Atul Dhirajlal Boda, Group Chairman of J.B. Boda Group of Companies - India and Overseas as speakers. Dr. Amarakoon Bandara from UNDP, Zimbabwe and Mr. Udai R. Patel handled the fifth technical session on Inclusive and Sustainable Growth of Insurance Industry in Developing Countries. Mr. Yassir Albaharna, Chief Executive Officer of Arab Insurance Group, Bahrain chaired the session. The sixth and last technical session on Reinsurance Trends in Emerging Markets in the light of growing Natural Catastrophes was chaired by Dr. Pedro P. Benedicto, President of Republic Surety and Insurance Company, Philippines with Mr. Tarupiwa Tarupiwa of Baobab Reinsurance (Private) Ltd, Zimbabwe and Ms. Champa Mellawa, Executive Vice President of Asian Reinsurance Corporation, Thailand, as speakers.
The 20th AIRDC Conference 2016 will be held in Manama, Bahrain.
